ELAPHITE ISLANDS

with speed boat

Picture
The Elaphites consist of large number of reefs and eight islands just north of Dubrovnik. Only three islands in the whole Elaphite archipelago are inhabited: Kolocep (Kalamota), Lopud and Sipan and on this tour you will have the chance to visit all three of them. The others are just a play place for the sea gulls rarely disturbed by the visitors in search of tranquil isolation. Each of these islands is like a special pearl, each similar to the other but still somehow different.

KOLOCEP ISLAND

Picture
Kolocep Island (or Kalamota as the locals call it) is an evergreen island full of pine and carob trees entangled with citrus gardens and small olive groves. The island is made up of limestone and dolomite rock but at each end there is a natural, miraculous, sandy beach. There are two settlements both interconnected by a meandering path that leads through the gardens and olive groves, unraveling the remnants of the ancient architecture. Apart from sightseeing and enjoying the beaches, you can hike across the island or ride a bicycle in the wonderful ambiance of the green Kolocep.

LOPUD ISLAND

One of the most interesting Elaphite islands is Lopud – a true summer feel, full of Mediterranean and subtropical vegetation, pine parks and citrus gardens. It is no wonder that in the time of the Dubrovnik Republic this island was a preferred spot of the patrician families where they built a summer residences. Sunj beach is one of a kind sandy beach in the Adriatic, maybe even the whole Mediterranean. On Lopud you can see numerous remains of early-medieval churches, summer manors and fortifications. You can also visit a Franciscan monastery dating from 1483 with a cloister and a defense tower with walls.

SIPAN ISLAND

Sipan is the largest of the Elaphite islands, and it was inhabited already in time of the Roman Empire. In the Middle ages famous Sipan’s vineyards were mentioned on many European courts. Today on Sipan people grow olives, figs, almonds, tomatoes, citrus fruits and off course there are large vineyards with finest grapes. Sipan also has many nice beaches where you can enjoy the sun and swim in the clean blue sea. It is beautiful island for spending a vacation and having a great time.
